PM Modi holds phone call with Ukraine’s Zelenskyy, emphasizes early peaceful resolution

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday held a telephonic conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, reaffirming India’s steadfast commitment to the peaceful settlement of the ongoing Ukraine conflict. The two leaders also discussed strengthening bilateral ties and cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

According to a release from the Prime Minister’s Office, PM Modi expressed appreciation to President Zelenskyy and reiterated India’s consistent position supporting efforts aimed at the earliest restoration of peace in Ukraine. PM Modi also assured that India stands ready to extend all possible support towards this goal.

President Zelenskyy shared his perspectives on recent developments related to the conflict, and the leaders agreed to maintain close communication going forward.

Taking to X, PM Modi said, “Glad to speak with President Zelenskyy and hear his perspectives on recent developments. I conveyed India’s consistent position on the need for an early and peaceful resolution of the conflict. India remains committed to making every possible contribution in this regard, as well as to further strengthening bilateral ties with Ukraine.”

The conversation comes days after PM Modi’s telephonic talk with Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 8. During that discussion, President Putin briefed PM Modi on the latest developments regarding the Ukraine crisis. PM Modi reiterated India’s consistent stance on peaceful resolution and invited Putin to the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit scheduled later this year.

The calls from PM Modi to both leaders precede a high-profile summit between US President Donald Trump and President Putin, set for August 15 in Alaska. The meeting is expected to focus on efforts to broker a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine. The White House is reportedly considering inviting President Zelenskyy to this summit, although his attendance remains undecided.
