Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated 184 newly constructed multi-storey flats for Members of Parliament (MPs) at Baba Kharak Singh Marg in New Delhi. The PM also planted a Sindoor sapling at the premises and interacted with ‘shramjeevis’ who contributed to the construction.
Addressing the gathering, PM Modi said, “Just a few days ago, I inaugurated the Common Central Secretariat at Kartavya Path, that is, Kartavya Bhawan and, today, I have the opportunity to inaugurate this residential complex for my colleagues in Parliament.”
PM Modi noted that the four towers named after great rivers (Krishna, Godavari, Kosi, and Hooghly) would now inspire MPs in their public service. “These rivers, which give life to millions, will now inspire a new stream of joy in the lives of public representatives. The tradition of naming rivers binds the nation in a thread of unity,” the Prime Minister said.
The self-sufficient complex, built with earthquake-resistant monolithic concrete using aluminium shuttering, meets GRIHA 3-star green building standards and NBC 2016 norms, ensuring durability, energy efficiency, and effective waste management. Spanning about 5,000 sq. ft. per unit, it offers modern amenities, dedicated offices, staff quarters, community facilities, and Divyang-friendly design for inclusivity.
The Prime Minister emphasised the broader context of the housing initiative. “Today, if the country fulfils the need for new homes for its MPs, it also facilitates the housewarming of 4 crore poor people through the PM-Awas Yojana,” the PM said.
Highlighting the project’s eco-friendly features, PM Modi said, “From solar-enabled infrastructure to the country’s new records in solar energy, the nation is continuously advancing the vision of sustainable development.”
PM Modi shared his personal observations after visiting a sample flat in the new complex. He compared them to older MP residences, noting their shortcomings. He said that many older accommodations were in poor condition and often caused inconvenience to MPs. The new housing, he said, would allow MPs to focus more on public service.
Addressing the difficulties faced by newly elected MPs in securing accommodation in Delhi, the PM expressed confidence that the new buildings would resolve such issues. Over 180 MPs will now reside together in these towers.
The PM also highlighted that earlier, due to the lack of adequate MP housing, expenditure had increased. “Not a single new housing unit was constructed for Lok Sabha MPs between 2004 and 2014. Post-2014, our government undertook this task as a mission, and with the inclusion of the newly inaugurated flats, approximately 350 MP residences have been constructed since then. With the completion of these residences, public money is now being saved, said PM Modi.
“21st-century India is as eager for development as it is sensitive to its responsibilities,” PM Modi added.
The Prime Minister encouraged MPs to celebrate regional festivals collectively, invite constituents to join, and learn each other’s languages to promote cultural and linguistic harmony. Sustainability, he said, should be a hallmark of the complex. “Not just the residences, but the entire premises should be maintained in a clean and hygienic manner,” PM Modi said.
PM Modi also proposed ‘Swacchata’ competitions among MP residential complexes to foster cleanliness and community pride.
The inauguration ceremony also included LS Speaker Om Birla, Union Ministers, MPs, and other dignitaries.
