Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the M.S. Swaminathan Centenary International Conference on August 7 in New Delhi, organized by the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), and National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS). The three-day event, themed “Evergreen Revolution – The Pathway to Bio Happiness,” will honor the legacy of Prof. M.S. Swaminathan, a pioneering agricultural scientist who transformed India into a food-surplus nation.
The conference, scheduled from August 7-9, will bring together global experts, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss sustainable agriculture and advance the principles of the ‘Evergreen Revolution.’ Key focus areas include conservation of biodiversity, climate-resilient and nutrition-sensitive agriculture, technology-driven livelihood solutions, and empowering youth, women, and communities in development.
Announcing the event, Dr. M.L. Jat, Secretary (DARE) and Director General (ICAR), hailed Prof. Swaminathan’s revolutionary contributions to Indian agriculture. “His leadership reshaped India’s agricultural landscape, turning a food-deficient nation into a food-surplus one,” Dr. Jat said, emphasizing the conference’s aim to chart the future of Indian agriculture with a focus on women’s participation.
During the inauguration, PM Modi will release a commemorative coin and stamp honoring the legendary scientist. Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, Chair of MSSRF, highlighted the global significance of the event in shaping sustainable agriculture, while Dr. Ashok Singh, Secretary of NAAS, described Prof. Swaminathan as a “god for millions” for his role in ensuring food security.
