PM Modi to visit Japan and China from August 29 to September 1

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a four-day visit to Japan and China later this month, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Friday.

At the invitation of Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, Modi will visit Japan from August 29–30 to attend the 15th India–Japan Annual Summit. This will be Modi’s eighth visit to Japan, and his first summit with Prime Minister Ishiba.

The two leaders will review the Special Strategic and Global Partnership between India and Japan, with discussions covering defence and security, trade and economy, technology and innovation, and people-to-people exchanges. Regional and global issues are also expected to feature in the talks.

In the second leg of the trip, Modi will travel to Tianjin, China, on August 31–September 1 to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping. On the sidelines of the summit, the Prime Minister is expected to hold bilateral meetings with several participating leaders.

India has been a member of the SCO since 2017 and held the presidency of its Council of Heads of State during 2022–23.
