China’s Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, on Thursday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Tianjin for the SCO Summit will give a fresh impetus to bilateral ties and will be an important event for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.
Speaking on the sidelines of an event organised by the Chintan Research Foundation in New Delhi, Xu said a joint working group from China and India is working hard to make the visit successful. “From our side, we attach great importance to this visit. It will be a very successful one,” he told reporters.
Xu recalled the recent visit of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to New Delhi, during which Wang handed over a message and an invitation from President Xi Jinping to Prime Minister Modi for the two-day SCO Summit starting August 31.
The Ambassador noted that during the meeting in New Delhi, Prime Minister Modi underlined the importance of maintaining peace and tranquillity on the border and reiterated India’s commitment to a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable resolution of the boundary question.
Xu drew attention to the 24th round of Special Representatives’ dialogue on the boundary question between NSA Ajit Doval and Wang Yi, saying the talks reached a “very important 10-point consensus.” He said the agreement includes the creation of two groups: an expert working group to explore early harvests for border delimitation in appropriate sectors, and a second group to focus on advanced management of border areas.
Addressing the gathering at the event titled “SCO Summit 2025 – Resetting India-China ties”, which was attended by foreign policy experts and former senior officials including Gen. (Retd.) M.M. Naravane, Xu stressed that China and India are partners, not rivals, and should manage differences through dialogue.
He said the world is going through a turbulent period and that the evolving international order makes China-India relations increasingly important. “China-India cooperation benefits both countries. We are important neighbours, major developing countries. Both countries are at the critical stage of national rejuvenation,” the Ambassador said.
Highlighting people-to-people exchanges, Xu welcomed the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and said Beijing is willing to work with India to promote friendly exchanges so citizens of both countries can visit each other “like relatives.”
