PM shares article on mission to make India sickle cell disease-free by 2047

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today shared an article by Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda on the government’s landmark effort to eliminate Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) from the country by 2047.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister’s Office described the National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission (NSCAEM) as a transformative step in public health. “From tackling a genetic disorder to ensuring equity and dignity, India’s National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission marks a new era in public health,” the post read, calling the article “a must-read reflection.”

Union Minister Nadda, in his article, said India’s fight against sickle cell anaemia is more than a public health campaign — it is a commitment to equity, dignity, and the well-being of the nation’s most marginalised communities.

Launched in July 2023, the NSCAEM aims to halt the transmission of SCD and improve the quality of life for millions affected by the condition. The initiative focuses on screening, counselling, and comprehensive care, particularly in tribal and high-prevalence regions.

“As India moves with determination towards the 2047 goal of eliminating SCD, the NSCAEM stands as a beacon of hope, showing what can be achieved when the government, healthcare professionals and communities work together for a common cause,” Nadda stated.
