Putin briefs PM Modi on Alaska talks with Trump

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, sharing his assessment of last week’s meeting with US President Donald Trump in Alaska.

During the conversation, PM Modi reiterated India’s consistent call for a peaceful settlement of the Ukraine conflict and New Delhi’s support for all diplomatic efforts. “Thank my friend, President Putin, for his phone call and for sharing insights on his recent meeting with President Trump in Alaska. India has consistently called for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict and supports all efforts in this regard. I look forward to our continued exchanges in the days to come,” the Prime Minister posted on X.

The two leaders also reviewed issues of bilateral cooperation and agreed to further strengthen the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia.

India had earlier welcomed the Alaska summit between Putin and Trump, describing their leadership in the pursuit of peace as “highly commendable.” The Ministry of External Affairs said, “The way forward can only be through dialogue and diplomacy. The world wants to see an early end to the conflict in Ukraine.”

Putin and Trump held three hours of talks at the Arctic Warrior Convention Centre in Anchorage, attended by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Presidential Aide Yury Ushakov, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. While both leaders reported progress, no immediate ceasefire was announced. “It’s not a done deal at all. And Ukraine has to agree. President [Volodymyr] Zelensky has to agree,” Trump told Fox News after the summit.

This was Putin’s second call to PM Modi in ten days. On August 8, the Russian President had briefed him about ongoing discussions with the US envoy in Moscow. Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is scheduled to meet External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in Moscow on August 21 for the 26th session of the Intergovernmental Russian-Indian Commission, where the two sides will review trade, economic, and strategic cooperation.
