Lucknow schools | UP rains

Rain batters UP: Schools shut in Lucknow, flood alert in multiple districts

All government and private schools from Classes 1 to 12 in Lucknow will remain closed on Monday amid heavy rainfall, District Magistrate Visakh G. Iyer announced on Sunday.

The closure comes as several districts in Uttar Pradesh continue to face waterlogging and rising river levels due to continuous downpours.

In Ayodhya’s Jalwanpura locality, residents waded through knee-deep floodwaters after the Saryu river overflowed. Similar scenes were witnessed in Varanasi, where low-lying areas were inundated following a steady rise in the water level of the Ganga.

Boat services in Varanasi have been suspended as a precaution. Commuters faced traffic snarls in parts of the city due to severe waterlogging.

Taking stock of the situation, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed ministers in charge to visit flood-affected districts, inspect relief camps, and interact with affected families. Senior officials, including District Magistrates, Superintendents of Police, and Chief Medical Officers, have been asked to stay on the ground and ensure round-the-clock monitoring.

An 11-member ministerial team has been deployed across 12 districts to oversee relief efforts. The Chief Minister warned against any negligence and stressed the need for swift, transparent, and sensitive handling of the crisis.

Instructions have been issued for timely delivery of food and relief materials, surveillance of embankments, proper sanitation in camps, and special care for women and children.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Uttar Pradesh between August 3 and 6.
