Stock markets open higher; Nifty above 25,000 amid mixed global cues

Equity benchmark indices opened in the green on Thursday, supported by mixed global trends. The Sensex rose 89 points to 81,947, while the Nifty advanced 14 points to 25,064.

In broader markets, the Nifty Midcap 100 slipped 0.10 per cent, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 gained 0.22 per cent.

Among sectoral indices, Nifty IT fell 0.61 per cent and Nifty FMCG declined 0.42 per cent. Nifty Realty gained 0.79 per cent.

Top gainers on the Nifty were SBI Life, Bajaj Finserv, Trent and Tata Motors. Hindustan Unilever, Tata Consumer Products, JSW Steel and Asian Paints were among the laggards.

On the global front, US markets ended mixed on Wednesday. The Dow Jones gained 0.04 per cent, while the Nasdaq fell 0.67 per cent and the S&P 500 slipped 0.24 per cent.

Asian markets traded mixed. Shanghai gained 0.30 per cent and Shenzhen added 0.38 per cent. Nikkei was down 0.58 per cent, Hang Seng dropped 0.13 per cent, while KOSPI advanced 1.11 per cent.

On Wednesday, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) turned net sellers for the second consecutive day, offloading Indian equities worth ₹1,100 crore. Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) supported the market with net purchases of ₹1,806 crore.

“Investors have to be vigilant about valuations in this market,” analysts cautioned.
