UPSC centenary year celebrations to begin from October 1

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) will mark its 100th year of existence with a year-long series of events and initiatives, beginning on October 1, 2025, and concluding on October 1, 2026. The decision was taken in a recent Commission meeting chaired by UPSC Chairman Ajay Kumar.

As part of the Centenary Year celebrations, UPSC will release a commemorative logo and tagline, along with launching several new initiatives and reforms. The Commission has also sought suggestions from its employees to make them active participants in the celebrations, with many valuable ideas already under consideration.

“Since its inception, UPSC has been a symbol of transparency, fairness, and meritocracy, ensuring the selection of the most deserving candidates through a rigorous and impartial process for senior-level positions in Government services,” said Kumar.

He emphasized that the Centenary Year is not only a time to celebrate the Commission’s legacy but also an opportunity to introspect, innovate, and chart a vision for the next century. “It is our endeavor to make the country proud by deploying the best human resources in the nation-building process,” added Kumar.

The Public Service Commission in India was first established on October 1, 1926, under the provisions of the Government of India Act, 1919, and the recommendations of the Lee Commission (1924). It became the Federal Public Service Commission in 1937 and was later renamed the Union Public Service Commission with the adoption of the Constitution on January 26, 1950.

Under Article 320 of the Constitution of India, the Union Public Service Commission is mandated to be consulted on all matters relating to recruitment to civil services and posts. The Commission plays a pivotal role in ensuring transparency and fairness in government recruitment processes.

Its functions include conducting examinations for appointment to Union services, carrying out direct recruitment through selection interviews, and overseeing appointments of officers on promotion, deputation, or absorption.

UPSC is also responsible for framing and amending Recruitment Rules for various government services and posts. In addition, it handles disciplinary cases concerning different civil services and advises the Government on matters referred to it by the President of India.
