Uttarakhand cloudburst: 10 Gujarat pilgrims rescued by army, reunited with families

Ten pilgrims from Banaskantha district in Gujarat, who were stranded near Dharali in Uttarakhand following a devastating cloudburst, have been successfully rescued by the Indian Army.

The pilgrims – all residents of Chichodra village in Bhabhar taluka – had lost contact with their families on August 5, shortly after the cloudburst struck Dharali. The families of the 11-member group, who were on a religious tour, grew increasingly concerned when all attempts to reach them failed for two consecutive days.

Relief came on the third day (August 7) at around 4 p.m., when communication was restored. Families were finally able to speak to their loved ones via video call, bringing relief and joy.

According to officials, ten of the pilgrims were airlifted from the disaster-hit area by an Army helicopter and brought safely to Rishikesh. They are now en route to Banaskantha, Gujarat. One member of the group reportedly chose to remain behind to continue the pilgrimage.

According to Uttarkashi Police, helicopter evacuations to the ITBP camp at Matli have been ongoing since early morning and will continue until all stranded individuals are safely moved out of the area.
