A cloudburst-like situation in Maharashtra’s Jalgaon district has affected 10 villages, inundated hundreds of houses, and caused significant damage to agricultural land, District Collector Ayush Prasad said on Tuesday.
According to preliminary reports, around 452 houses were submerged, nearly 2,500 hectares of farmland were damaged by silt deposition, and almost 1,800 animals perished in the floods.
“A cloudburst situation arose in and around Jalgaon, leading to a sudden rise in the water level of free-flowing rivers and drains. Water entered nearby houses, impacting 10 villages. Nearly 250 cattle have died, and power supply has now been restored,” Prasad told ANI. He added that the Maharashtra State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) is distributing food to affected families who lost their ration supplies.
Maharashtra Water Resources and Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan visited the rain-affected areas on Tuesday to assess the damage. He said that heavy rains had lashed four tehsils of Jalgaon for two consecutive days, causing widespread losses to farmers.
“Water entered people’s homes, crops were washed away, and farmers have suffered major losses. I have directed all officers to conduct a survey at the earliest so that compensation can be provided to the affected families,” Mahajan said.
Relief and rehabilitation work is underway, with district authorities and SDRF teams actively engaged in providing essential supplies and assistance to those impacted.
