Two weeks after attack, Delhi CM Rekha Gupta resumes ‘Jan Sunwai’ under heavy security

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday resumed her ‘Jan Sunwai’ (public hearing) programme at her Civil Lines camp office under heightened security, nearly two weeks after she was attacked at the venue.

A large number of residents turned up to present their grievances and seek the Chief Minister’s intervention.

The programme, which began at 8 am, was held under a heavy security blanket. Police deployment was stepped up around the camp office, located adjacent to the CM’s official residence, with metal detectors and CCTV cameras installed to monitor the event.

Access to the CM was tightly controlled. Security personnel formed a protective ring around her, while a table separated her from visitors who queued up to submit complaints.

Sharing photos from Wednesday’s session on X, Gupta wrote: “Today, during the public hearing, I met citizens from various parts of the capital and listened to their suggestions and problems. Dialogue with the public always gives me new energy and deepens my dedication to service. Public hearing is a new culture of service. The resolve of the Delhi government is to give topmost priority to public service and provide swift solutions to every citizen.”

The Jan Sunwai programme had been suspended after the August 20 attack, when Rajeshbhai Khimjibhai Sakriyaa, a 41-year-old man from Rajkot, Gujarat, assaulted Gupta by posing as a complainant. The Delhi Police later arrested Sakriya along with another individual in connection with the incident.
