As North India continues to reel under heavy rainfall, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of intense showers in the Union Territory of Ladakh.
IMD Director for Ladakh Sonam Lotus said that eastern Ladakh has been experiencing continuous rainfall for the past 48 to 72 hours.
“Continuous rain has been occurring in Eastern Ladakh for approximately 48 to 72 hours. Intermittent showers are also being reported in Leh,” Lotus told ANI.
Providing an update on the ground situation, Lotus said the intensity of rain is expected to remain high in several parts of the UT, particularly in central Ladakh, Leh, and Kargil, on Wednesday.
“Tonight, the intensity of rain is expected to be higher in Central Ladakh, Leh, and Kargil areas,” he added.
However, Lotus assured that the weather is likely to improve gradually. “The rain in Eastern Ladakh is expected to decrease, with improvement in weather conditions anticipated from the fourth day,” he said.
Meanwhile, the IMD has issued red alert warnings for several northern and central states of India. Districts under red alert include Poonch, Mirpur, Rajouri, Reasi, Jammu, Ramban, Udhampur, Samba, Kathua, Doda, and Kishtwar in Jammu & Kashmir. In Punjab, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Nawashahr, Rupnagar, Moga, Ludhiana, Barnala, and Sangrur are under red alert. Himachal Pradesh has also been put on high alert, with warnings issued for Mandi, Una, Bilaspur, Sirmaur, and Solan.
Other regions, including northern Haryana, eastern Rajasthan, southwest Uttar Pradesh, northwest and eastern Madhya Pradesh, and Odisha, are also facing red alert warnings due to heavy rainfall forecasts.
Meanwhile, landslides triggered by incessant rains continue to cause disruption in Himachal Pradesh. In Kullu, search and rescue operations are underway in the Akhara Bazaar area following a landslide. About 80 km away in Jogindernagar, around 15 houses were evacuated after a landslide hit the area. The local administration said residents were moved out safely as a precautionary measure, and the situation is being closely monitored.
