Govt hails Ramgoolam’s visit to Kashi Vishwanath as symbol of deep India-Mauritius ties

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday described the visit of Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi as a strong testament to the deep cultural and civilisational ties between India and Mauritius.

In a post on X, the MEA said: “PM Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam of Mauritius offered prayers at the sacred Kashi Vishwanath Dham in Varanasi—a visit reflecting the deep cultural and civilisational bonds that unite India and Mauritius”.

The Mauritian Prime Minister participated in prayers and rituals at the revered temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. He is also scheduled to visit the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya later on Friday.

Ramgoolam arrived in Varanasi on Wednesday and held a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday.

During their discussions, both leaders reviewed all aspects of bilateral cooperation and deliberated on regional and global issues. They reaffirmed their commitment to deepening collaboration in sectors such as infrastructure, healthcare, digital technology, energy, and maritime security.

The two countries also strengthened their strategic and developmental partnership through multiple agreements, including a comprehensive Special Economic Package exceeding USD 680 million. Seven MoUs were signed across diverse sectors, including science and technology, oceanography, public administration, power, small development projects, hydrography, and space cooperation.

Key agreements included a space collaboration deal for establishing telemetry, tracking, and communication stations, along with a renewed commitment to maritime research and hydrographic mapping.

Ramgoolam is on an eight-day bilateral visit to India, running from September 9 to September 16.
