Heavy rainfall expected over northeast and eastern India; Bihar likely to receive heavy showers

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday predicted enhanced rainfall activity over northeast and adjoining east India over the next few days, with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall likely in several states.

Bihar is expected to receive heavy showers on Thursday, while sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim may experience similar conditions on September 13. Arunachal Pradesh is likely to see heavy rainfall on September 13 and 14, followed by Nagaland and Manipur between September 12 and 15, and Assam and Meghalaya between September 13 and 15.

A fresh spell of heavy rain is also forecast over Peninsular India during the next four to five days, with increased rainfall activity expected across Maharashtra from September 12 to 14. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in Marathwada on September 12 and 13, and in Konkan, Goa, and central Maharashtra on September 13 and 14. Mizoram and Tripura are also expected to receive heavy rainfall during this period.

In the past 24 hours, very heavy rain was recorded in Bihar, central Maharashtra, Marathwada, north interior Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. Heavy rainfall was also reported in parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Chhattisgarh, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, south interior Karnataka, Telangana, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Rayalaseema.

Meanwhile, Delhi-NCR is expected to remain mostly dry, with partly cloudy skies over the next four days. On September 11 and 12, maximum temperatures are likely to range between 33°C and 35°C, slightly above normal, while minimum temperatures will stay between 24°C and 26°C. Surface winds from the northwest are expected to blow at speeds of 20-30 kmph, gusting to 40 kmph, before easing at night.

On September 13 and 14, skies are likely to turn generally cloudy with the possibility of very light rain. Maximum temperatures may rise slightly to 34-36°C on September 13 before dipping to 32-34°C the next day, while minimum temperatures will remain near 24°C and 26°C. Wind speeds are expected to gradually decrease to 5-15 kmph through the period.
