Heavy rainfall likely over Saurashtra, Kutch; above-normal night temperatures persist in northwest India

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday forecast extremely heavy rainfall over coastal areas of Saurashtra and Kutch under the influence of a well-marked low-pressure area over the Gulf of Cambay. Rainfall intensity is likely to reduce slightly after very heavy rain over the region on September 30, while parts of Gujarat are also likely to receive heavy showers on Monday.

Rainfall activity is expected to increase over eastern India from October 2, with isolated heavy rainfall likely over Gangetic West Bengal on October 2, sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on October 3 and 4, Bihar on October 4 and 5, and Assam and Meghalaya on October 2 and 3.

The IMD reported that extremely heavy rainfall was recorded over isolated places in Konkan and Gujarat during the past 24 hours, while heavy to very heavy rain occurred over the ghat areas of central Maharashtra, Odisha, and coastal Karnataka. Tripura, the Andaman Islands, Uttarakhand, western Madhya Pradesh, Goa, south interior Karnataka, and Kerala also received heavy rainfall.

IMD defines heavy rain as rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm, very heavy rain as rainfall between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm, and extremely heavy rain as rainfall exceeding 204.4 mm.

Meanwhile, night temperatures remain significantly above normal – by 3-5°C – over several parts of northwest India and are likely to stay elevated until October 4.

In Delhi-NCR, the weather is expected to remain warm with partly cloudy skies on Monday and maximum temperatures ranging from 35-37°C, which is 1-3°C above normal. Winds from the southeast will blow at 10–15 kmph during the afternoon before easing in the evening.

On September 30, the sky will become generally cloudy with a spell of very light rain or drizzle in the evening. The maximum and minimum temperatures will hover around 34-36°C and 24-26°C, both remaining slightly above normal.

Light rain or drizzle may continue on October 1 in the morning under generally cloudy skies, with daytime temperatures moderating to near normal. The pattern is expected to persist through October 2, accompanied by southeasterly winds and warm nights.
