Heavy rains flood Delhi-NCR, Yamuna rises above danger mark

Heavy rains lashed parts of Delhi-NCR on Wednesday afternoon, inundating low-lying areas and pushing the Yamuna River above the danger mark.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a “generally cloudy sky with moderate rain” in Delhi on Wednesday, followed by a “thunderstorm with rain” on Thursday. Similar conditions are expected through the week, with moderate rain on September 5, another thunderstorm on September 6, and cloudy skies on September 7 and 8.

Following morning showers, the Yamuna reached 207 metres at the Old Railway Bridge around 1 pm, surpassing the danger level of 205.33 metres. Officials said the river remains below the all-time high of 208.66 metres.

Authorities have set up relief camps in Yamuna Khadar and Mayur Vihar Phase-I as the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) stepped up evacuation efforts. “Four teams are currently on the ground, while 14–18 teams remain on standby,” NDRF Commandant Gyaneshwar Singh said.

In Yamuna Bazar, residents were evacuated after floodwaters entered homes. Villagers in Old Usmanpur and Old Garhi Mendu also shifted out with their cattle as water levels rose in their neighbourhoods.

Flooding was reported in adjoining areas as well, including Noida’s Sector 167, following heavy rainfall.
