IMD forecasts heavy rainfall in Gujarat, Rajasthan, northeast India; Delhi to see partly cloudy skies

Under the influence of a deep depression over southeast Pakistan and adjoining Rajasthan, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected to continue over southwest Rajasthan, northern Gujarat and northeast India on Monday, with extremely heavy showers likely at isolated places in Saurashtra and Kutch. The intensity of rainfall is expected to reduce thereafter.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim between September 8 and 10, while Nagaland and Manipur may receive similar spells on September 11 and 12. Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya are forecast to experience heavy showers between September 12 and 14. A fresh spell of heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Odisha on September 11 and 12.

In the past 24 hours, extremely heavy rainfall (more than 30 cm) was recorded at isolated places in Gujarat, while eastern Rajasthan also reported very heavy to extremely heavy showers (over 21 cm). Isolated areas in western Rajasthan, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and Odisha saw very heavy rainfall (12–20 cm). Heavy showers were also reported in Punjab, Chhattisgarh, Assam, Nagaland, Bihar, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Konkan, central Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu.

Meanwhile, Delhi-NCR is expected to witness partly cloudy skies with light rain or thundershowers at isolated places between September 8 and 11.

On Monday, one or two spells of light showers are likely in the afternoon or evening, with maximum temperatures ranging between 34°C and 36°C, which is 1–3°C above normal.

On September 9, very light rain or thundershowers may occur in isolated parts of the city, with temperatures expected to remain in the range of 34°C to 36°C for the maximum and 24°C to 26°C for the minimum. Similar conditions will persist on September 10, though wind speeds are expected to be stronger in the morning, reaching 20–25 kmph before easing later in the day.

On September 11, partly cloudy skies are expected in Delhi-NCR, with maximum temperatures likely to range between 33°C and 35°C and minimum temperatures between 23°C and 25°C. The minimum temperature may remain slightly below normal, while the maximum is expected to stay marginally above normal.

The IMD has urged residents in vulnerable regions, particularly in Gujarat, Rajasthan, and the northeast, to remain cautious as heavy rainfall and flooding risks persist in several areas.
