IMD predicts heavy rainfall in several states, signals onset of monsoon withdrawal from Rajasthan

A low-pressure area over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal, off the northern Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha coasts, is set to trigger widespread rainfall activity over eastern, southern, and central India in the coming days.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall over Odisha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Yanam on September 12 and 13, Telangana between September 12 and 14, and Maharashtra between September 13 and 15.

Enhanced rainfall activity is also expected over the northeast and adjoining eastern India. Assam and Meghalaya are likely to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall between September 12 and 16, while Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura may receive heavy to very heavy rainfall between September 12 and 15. Arunachal Pradesh is likely to experience heavy rainfall from September 13 to 15, with Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and Bihar also forecast to receive significant rainfall on September 13 and 14.

The IMD has further stated that conditions are becoming favourable for the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from some parts of western Rajasthan starting around September 15.

In the past 24 hours, extremely heavy rainfall (21 cm or more) was recorded at isolated places over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Telangana. Very heavy rainfall was reported in Uttarakhand, while heavy rainfall occurred at several locations across Himachal Pradesh, eastern Uttar Pradesh, eastern Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Sikkim, Assam and Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram and Tripura, Odisha, Jharkhand, Marathawada, Rayalaseema, and Tamil Nadu.

Meanwhile, Delhi-NCR is expected to witness partly cloudy to generally cloudy skies between September 12 and 15, with the possibility of very light rain on September 13 and 14. Daytime temperatures are likely to remain between 32°C and 35°C, with maximum temperatures expected to stay slightly above normal on most days. Surface winds will predominantly blow from the northwest direction at speeds between 15 and 30 kmph, gradually weakening during evening and night hours.
