India successfully tests Agni-Prime missile from rail-based launcher

India on Thursday successfully conducted a test launch of the intermediate-range Agni-Prime missile from a rail-based mobile launcher system. The launch was carried out by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in collaboration with the Strategic Forces Command (SFC).

Congratulating DRDO and SFC, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on X: “India has carried out the successful launch of the Intermediate Range Agni-Prime Missile from a Rail-Based Mobile Launcher system. This next-generation missile is designed to cover a range of up to 2,000 km and is equipped with various advanced features. The first-of-its-kind launch, carried out from a specially designed Rail-Based Mobile Launcher, has the capability to move on the rail network without any pre-conditions, allowing the user cross-country mobility and the ability to launch within a short reaction time with reduced visibility.”

“This successful flight test has put India in the group of select nations that have developed canisterised launch systems from an on-the-move rail network,” Singh added.

According to the defence ministry, the missile’s trajectory was closely tracked by multiple ground stations, confirming a textbook launch. This success paves the way for the future induction of rail-based missile systems into operational services.

Senior DRDO scientists and officers of the Strategic Forces Command witnessed the launch.
