India will host the 5th edition of the Coast Guard Global Summit (CGGS) in Chennai in 2027, coinciding with the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), officials said on Saturday.
The decision was taken unanimously at the 4th CGGS held in Rome on September 11–12, which saw participation from delegates representing 115 countries and international organisations. The three-day Chennai meet will include an International Coast Guard Fleet Review and a World Coast Guard Seminar, aimed at providing a global platform to discuss emerging maritime challenges and strengthen international maritime cooperation.
Director General of the ICG Paramesh Sivamani, during the ceremonial handover of the CGGS presidency in Rome, stressed that no single nation can tackle the full spectrum of maritime threats alone. He said the Chennai summit will serve as an inclusive forum to enhance interoperability, build trust and deepen collaboration among Coast Guards worldwide.
The ICG chief also lauded the Italian Coast Guard for hosting the summit and thanked the Japan Coast Guard for its role as the CGGS Secretariat.
On the sidelines of the event, Sivamani held discussions with the Commandant of the Italian Coast Guard under the framework of the India–Italy Joint Strategic Action Plan (2025–2029). Both sides agreed to step up cooperation in maritime search and rescue, marine pollution response, environmental protection, tackling transnational maritime crimes, information exchange, capacity building, training and technical assistance.
