Indian Navy’s first training squadron makes port call at Mombasa, strengthens maritime ties with Kenya

The Indian Navy’s First Training Squadron (1TS), comprising INS Tir, INS Sujata, INS Shardul, and ICGS Sarathi, arrived at Mombasa, Kenya, on Thursday as part of its long-range training deployment to the South West Indian Ocean Region. The squadron received a warm welcome from the Kenya Navy, the Defence Advisor, and the Acting High Commissioner of India.

The visit to Mombasa follows earlier port calls in Seychelles, Mauritius, La Réunion, and Mozambique, and is aimed at bolstering maritime cooperation and capacity-building efforts between the Indian and Kenyan navies.

During the port call, personnel from both navies will participate in a series of professional exchanges and training engagements, including joint exercises such as the Maritime Partnership Exercise (MPX) and Passage Exercise (PASSEX). The visit will also feature a joint yoga session, cultural exchange through combined performances by the Indian and Kenya Navy Bands, and community outreach initiatives in Mombasa.

The deployment highlights India’s commitment to the spirit of MAHASAGAR—Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions—by fostering stronger maritime partnerships, enhancing interoperability, and promoting regional security and stability.
