Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday greeted people on the occasion of Mahalaya, which marks the beginning of Durga Puja festivities.
“Wishing you all Shubho Mahalaya! As the sacred days of Durga Puja draw near, may our lives be filled with light and purpose. May the divine blessings of Maa Durga bring unwavering strength, lasting joy and wonderful health,” the Prime Minister said in a post on X.
Mahalaya is observed at the conclusion of Shradh or Pitru Paksha, a 16-day period when Hindus honour their ancestors. The day heralds the arrival of Devi Paksha, symbolising the triumph of good over evil and the commencement of Durga Puja celebrations.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also conveyed her wishes on social media. “Awake Durga, awake, bearer of ten weapons. On the occasion of Tan, Agomoni, and Abahan, I offer my heartfelt Mahalaya greetings to all. On this occasion, I am sharing with all of you a new Puja song written and composed by me,” she posted.
In West Bengal, Mahalaya is synonymous with the pre-dawn broadcast of Mahishasura Mardini, a programme of hymns and chants invoking the Goddess, a tradition cherished for generations. Thousands of devotees also performed tarpan rituals on the banks of the Hooghly River and other water bodies, offering prayers to their ancestors.
The day also carries special significance for artisans, as sculptors traditionally paint the eyes of Goddess Durga idols in a ritual known as Chokhhu Daan.
With Mahalaya, preparations for Durga Puja now begin in full swing across West Bengal and other parts of the country.
