The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Monday issued a clarification following media reports that alleged the regulator had rejected a political party’s application to send SMS messages to its workers in Maharashtra as part of a campaign.
In a statement, TRAI categorically denied any involvement in the acceptance or rejection of such SMS campaigns, making it clear that these responsibilities lie with Telecom Service Providers (TSPs).
“The approval or rejection of SMS message templates is carried out by the TSPs in accordance with the framework prescribed under Telecom Commercial Communication Customer Preference Regulation (TCCCPR), 2018,” the regulator said.
Reiterating its position, TRAI added that it plays no role in individual cases of SMS campaign approvals or rejections, including the one recently reported in the media.
