Mauritius Prime Minister Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam on Thursday lauded India’s longstanding support and partnership with Mauritius, saying that his country has “benefited immensely” from India’s generous assistance and expertise across multiple sectors over the years.
Speaking at a joint press briefing following his bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Ramgoolam highlighted the historic and deep-rooted ties between the two nations and expressed heartfelt gratitude for India’s continued support in critical areas of national development, including health, education, capacity building, renewable energy, infrastructure, and maritime security.
“Over the years, India, through its various governments, has accompanied Mauritius in its journey towards progress. Even before our independence, India had a High Commission in Mauritius. We have benefited immensely from India’s generous assistance and expertise in key sectors of development — health, education, capacity building, renewable energy, infrastructure, and maritime security. India’s timely support in these areas continues to make a tangible difference in improving the quality of life of the Mauritian people,” Ramgoolam said.
The Mauritian leader also expressed his appreciation for what he described as a “special economic package” announced by PM Modi, aimed at boosting bilateral cooperation in education, health services, energy, and infrastructure.
“A key highlight of this visit is the upcoming establishment of a high-quality Ayurvedic Centre in Mauritius, which will be an exceptional one thanks to the support and blessings of Prime Minister Modi. This package is truly special — its timing has allowed us to deliver tangible outcomes, and I am glad that our ties have now entered a dynamic and forward-looking phase,” he added.
Ramgoolam also expressed deep gratitude for the warm hospitality extended to him and his delegation since their arrival in India. Recalling his ceremonial welcome in Varanasi, he remarked, “Both my wife and I were amazed at the welcome we received. I believe no other Prime Minister has ever been accorded such a reception. I am glad this visit is taking place in your constituency, and I now understand why you are elected with such huge margins.”
This marks Ramgoolam’s first overseas bilateral visit in his current term, taking place from September 9 to 16. He previously visited India in May 2014 as the only non-SAARC leader invited to attend the swearing-in ceremony of PM Modi and the Council of Ministers.
Ramgoolam arrived in Varanasi on September 10, where he was accorded a ceremonial welcome and Guard of Honour. Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel personally received him at the airport. Earlier in the day, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri called on Ramgoolam, following which the Mauritian leader held delegation-level talks with PM Modi, underscoring the enduring strength and warmth of India–Mauritius ties.
