Piyush Goyal meets German Foreign Minister; trade and investment ties in focus

Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal held talks with visiting German Foreign Minister Dr. Johann David Wadephul in New Delhi on Wednesday, with discussions centred on expanding bilateral trade, strengthening investment flows, and identifying new areas of cooperation in innovation, sustainability and technology.

Dr. Wadephul was accompanied by a high-level business delegation comprising leaders from major German companies including Thyssenkrupp, Siemens Mobility, Allianz and Flix SE. Following the ministerial meeting, both sides interacted with Indian industry representatives from sectors such as automotive components, healthcare, steel and space.

The two ministers underlined the need for building resilient supply chains and closer business-to-business collaboration. They reaffirmed their commitment to an early and ambitious conclusion of the India–EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Issues relating to migration, mobility and non-tariff barriers faced by Indian exporters in the EU were also discussed, with both sides agreeing to work towards practical solutions.

Commerce Minister Goyal welcomed German companies’ plans to scale up investments in India through expanded operations, manufacturing capacity and new facilities. He highlighted India’s strong economic fundamentals, noting that the country is the fastest-growing major economy and is set to become the world’s third-largest economy, contributing nearly 20% to global growth.

The Minister assured the German delegation of full government support and encouraged greater collaboration with Indian industry to drive future initiatives. German corporate leaders expressed confidence in India’s growth story and reiterated their commitment to partner in achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
