PM Modi congratulates Nepal’s interim PM Karki, extends National Day greetings

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday spoke with Nepal’s interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki and conveyed India’s support for the restoration of peace and stability in the neighbouring country, while extending condolences over the loss of lives in recent protests.

During the telephonic conversation, PM Modi congratulated Karki on her appointment and extended best wishes on behalf of the Government and people of India.

He expressed heartfelt condolences for the tragic deaths in the recent demonstrations in Nepal and underlined India’s readiness to work closely with Kathmandu to strengthen bilateral ties and support Nepal’s efforts towards peace, stability and progress.

Karki thanked PM Modi for India’s steadfast backing and reciprocated his desire to deepen the traditionally close relationship between the two countries.

The Prime Minister also extended greetings to Nepal on its National Day tomorrow.

The two leaders agreed to remain in regular contact.

Karki was appointed interim prime minister last week following the resignation of KP Sharma Oli, who quit amid mounting pressure from a nationwide youth-led movement. The agitation, spearheaded largely by Gen Z activists disillusioned with corruption and political stagnation, had called for a neutral leader to steer Nepal through a transitional phase. The protests had erupted after the government imposed a ban on social media platforms.
