PM Modi expresses anguish over Nepal situation; Cabinet Committee on Security discusses situation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) to review the situation in Nepal, where violent protests have led to the tragic loss of lives, particularly among young people.

Expressing deep sorrow over the developments, the Prime Minister underscored the importance of peace, stability, and prosperity in the neighbouring country.

“On my return from Himachal Pradesh and Punjab today, a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security discussed the developments in Nepal. The violence in Nepal is heart-rending. I am anguished that many young people have lost their lives. The stability, peace and prosperity of Nepal are of utmost importance to us. I humbly appeal to all my brothers and sisters in Nepal to support peace,” said PM Modi in a post on X.

The CCS deliberations highlighted India’s concern over regional stability and its commitment to peace and security in South Asia. Meanwhile, authorities have increased vigilance along the Indo-Nepal border, while Indian citizens in Nepal have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and remain indoors.

Nepal is currently facing one of its worst political and social crises in recent years, triggered by a controversial government decision to ban 26 social media platforms. The move sparked massive youth-led demonstrations, dubbed the “Gen Z movement,” with protesters calling the ban an assault on free expression.

What began as peaceful protests soon escalated into violent clashes with security forces. At least 19 people have been killed and more than 300 injured after police reportedly used live ammunition, rubber bullets, and tear gas to disperse crowds.

Although the government has since lifted the ban on social media, the violence has led to widespread outrage and demands for accountability. Several ministers have resigned, followed by Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli himself. Reports also suggest that President Ram Chandra Poudel has stepped down.

With flights to and from Kathmandu suspended and the Army deployed to maintain order, the situation in Nepal remains tense and volatile.
