During the China leg of the trip, PM Modi attended the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin (August 31–September 1) and held bilateral meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Calling the visit “productive” in a post on X, the Prime Minister said he underlined India’s stand on key global issues during his engagements. He also thanked President Xi Jinping, the Chinese government, and the people for the successful organisation of the Summit.
At his meeting with President Putin, PM Modi reiterated that India-Russia cooperation is essential for global peace, stability, and prosperity.
Addressing the 25th SCO Summit on Monday, the Prime Minister called for stronger measures against terror financing and radicalisation. Referring to the Pahalgam terror attack, he urged the SCO to hold nations supporting cross-border terrorism accountable. He also congratulated Kyrgyzstan on assuming the SCO presidency.
The Summit discussions covered the SCO Development Strategy, global governance reform, counter-terrorism, peace and security, economic and financial cooperation, and sustainable development. Modi outlined India’s vision of enhancing collaboration under three pillars – Security, Connectivity, and Opportunity.
On Sunday, PM Modi held bilateral talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Both leaders noted positive momentum in bilateral relations since their meeting in Kazan during the BRICS Summit in October 2024. They reaffirmed that India and China are “development partners, not rivals,” and agreed that differences should not be allowed to escalate into disputes. They stressed the need for a stable relationship based on mutual respect, interests, and sensitivity.
The Prime Minister also interacted with several world leaders at the SCO Summit reception, including leaders from Southeast Asia, Central Asia, and Eurasia. His engagements included discussions with counterparts from the Maldives, Nepal, Laos, Vietnam, Armenia, and Turkmenistan, where he reaffirmed India’s commitment to expanding cooperation across multiple sectors.
Before arriving in China, PM Modi visited Tokyo for the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit (August 29–30). He praised the outcomes of the visit and expressed confidence that India-Japan ties would continue to reach greater heights.
