PM Narendra Modi | GST Reforms

PM Modi welcomes GST council’s nod to reforms, says move will benefit citizens and businesses

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday welcomed the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council’s collective approval of the Union Government’s proposals on rate cuts and reforms, describing the decision as a step that will benefit a wide spectrum of society, including farmers, the middle class, women, youth, and small businesses.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister said the reforms mark the beginning of the “Next-Generation GST,” aimed at improving ease of living and ensuring economic strength.

“During my Independence Day speech, I had spoken about our intention to bring the Next-Generation reforms in GST. The Union Government had prepared a detailed proposal for broad-based GST rate rationalisation and process reforms, aimed at ease of living for the common man and strengthening the economy. Glad to state that the GST Council, comprising the Union and the States, has collectively agreed to the proposals,” he wrote.

According to the PM, the wide-ranging reforms will not only improve the lives of citizens but also enhance the ease of doing business, particularly for small traders and enterprises.

The GST council’s decision comes after detailed discussions on rationalising rates and simplifying processes, a move the government says will boost affordability, support MSMEs, and strengthen the broader economy.
