President Murmu presents 71st National Film Awards, confers Dadasaheb Phalke Award on Mohanlal

President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday presented the 71st National Film Awards at a glittering ceremony in New Delhi, honouring excellence in Indian cinema across multiple categories. The President also conferred the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2023 on veteran actor Mohanlal, lauding him as the “Complete Actor” who has effortlessly portrayed the full spectrum of human emotions.

Congratulating all award winners, President Murmu praised Mohanlal’s extraordinary contribution to Indian cinema, saying his versatility has made him a beloved figure across generations.

The President expressed happiness that a growing number of women-centric films were being made and recognised. She highlighted that the award-winning films included powerful stories of mothers shaping the moral compass of their children; women challenging social stereotypes; the struggles faced by women within family and society; and courageous voices rising against patriarchy and inequality.

She commended the filmmakers for their sensitive storytelling and for bringing such important issues to the forefront.

President Murmu described Indian cinema as the cultural mirror of the world’s largest democracy and most diverse society. “Just as Indian literature is created in many languages, Indian cinema is developing in many languages, dialects, regions, and local environments. Our films are both local and national,” she said, adding that this diversity strengthens the emotional bond among citizens.

Underscoring that cinema is not just an industry but a powerful medium for social awareness, the President urged filmmakers to focus on content that benefits society, particularly the younger generation. She called for collective efforts to ensure Indian films gain greater global acceptance and recognition, helping Indian cinema shine on the world stage.

The ceremony was attended by leading personalities from the film industry, government officials, and members of the jury.
