World Osteoporosis Day 2025

Ayurveda offers holistic pathway to strengthen bones on World Osteoporosis Day 2025

Marking World Osteoporosis Day 2025, the Ministry of Ayush has highlighted the importance of preventive healthcare and lifestyle-based solutions to address osteoporosis, a growing public health concern that often goes undetected until a fracture occurs.

Described as a “silent disease,” osteoporosis leads to the gradual weakening of bones, increasing the risk of fractures, particularly in the hip, spine, and wrist. While contemporary medicine attributes the condition to hormonal changes and bone demineralisation with age, Ayurveda links it to the vitiation of Vata dosha, which results in reduced bone density and strength.

Prof. Rabinarayan Acharya, Director General of the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), said osteoporosis is a growing challenge that can be effectively addressed through Ayurveda’s preventive and restorative framework. He noted that the classical concept of Asthi Saushirya in Ayurveda aligns closely with the modern medical understanding of bone fragility. He also mentioned that CCRAS is conducting scientific validation of Ayurvedic formulations such as Laksha Guggulu and Pravala Pishti for managing musculoskeletal conditions.

According to the ministry, Ayurveda offers a comprehensive approach that includes rejuvenative therapy (Rasayana) to strengthen the skeletal system in early stages. Therapeutic massage (Snehana) using medicated oils like Mahanarayana Taila and Bala Lakshadi Taila is believed to nourish deep tissues and improve bone and joint health. Ayurvedic herbal preparations such as Laksha Guggulu, Maha Yogaraj Guggulu, Pravala Pishti and Mukta Shukti Bhasma are traditionally used to enhance bone strength and promote healing.

A Vata-pacifying diet and lifestyle also play a significant role in supporting bone health. Foods like horse gram, ginger, garlic, green gram, ash gourd, and fruits such as pomegranate, mango and grapes are recommended to maintain vitality and bone density. In addition, yoga and moderate exercise are advised to improve flexibility, promote blood circulation to joints, and prevent stiffness associated with ageing.

The Ministry of Ayush has urged citizens, particularly the elderly and post-menopausal women, to integrate these Ayurvedic practices into their daily routine to reduce the risk of fractures and support healthy ageing. It said a combination of balanced nutrition, gentle physical activity, and timely interventions can go a long way in managing osteoporosis naturally.
