Magnus Carlsen | gukesh | Clutch Chess Champions Showdown

Champions Showdown: Gukesh slips to last, Carlsen takes sole lead after Day 2

Reigning world champion Gukesh Dommaraju endured a tough day at the Clutch Chess Champions Showdown, dropping to the bottom of the table with no wins, while Magnus Carlsen took the sole lead with four victories and two losses on the second day.

Gukesh, who began the day as the sole leader, suffered two defeats against Carlsen. He later drew the first game against Hikaru Nakamura, whom he had defeated on the opening day to avenge his loss in the Checkmate: USA vs India exhibition match.

In the second game, the Indian Grandmaster had a brief opportunity in a relatively balanced rook endgame but failed to capitalize, and the game ended in a draw. He then lost to Fabiano Caruana and concluded the day with another draw, ChessBase reported.

“I’m not exactly happy with my play and was just not able to be sharp today. I was taking a lot of time, which I shouldn’t have. I’ll try to forget what happened and come fresh tomorrow,” Gukesh said after the round.

Carlsen, meanwhile, lost his first game of the event to Caruana and suffered a second defeat against him later in the day. Despite that, the World No. 1 took the sole lead with 11.5 points out of 18, followed by Caruana on 10.5. Nakamura and Gukesh are tied on 7 points each.

Clutch Chess is a unique tournament format created by Grandmaster Maurice Ashley, where stakes rise each round, with increasing points and cash prizes awarded daily.

The 18-game rapid double round-robin event (10 minutes plus a 5-second increment) features escalating point values: wins are worth 1 point on Day 1, 2 points on Day 2, and 3 points on Day 3.

Since point values increase each day, players who start slowly can still make dramatic comebacks until the end, with 18 points available on the final day. On Day 1, each win earns 1 point and USD 1,000; on Day 2, 2 points and USD 2,000; and on Day 3, 3 points and USD 3,000.
