The Competition Commission of India (CCI) on Monday released a report examining artificial intelligence (AI) adoption in India, its impact on competition, and the regulatory frameworks guiding its development.
The study, conducted through the Management Development Institute Society (MDIS), assessed AI markets and ecosystems, identified emerging competition issues, and reviewed legal and regulatory frameworks. Researchers used literature reviews, database analysis, interviews, and stakeholder surveys to provide an in-depth understanding of the sector.
According to the report, AI adoption is accelerating across industries, reshaping business operations, competition dynamics, and regulatory responses. While AI offers efficiency and innovation benefits, it may also create competition risks that could limit its full potential.
To foster a competitive AI ecosystem and curb anti-competitive practices, CCI proposed measures including conferences and workshops on AI and competition compliance, the creation of a think tank focused on digital markets and AI, strengthened technical infrastructure, inter-regulatory coordination, and engagement with international competition authorities.
The report also underscores the need for government support to enhance AI infrastructure, remove entry barriers, and promote a level playing field. Enterprises are encouraged to conduct self-audits and adopt transparency measures to address potential competition concerns.
CCI said the study’s findings and recommendations are expected to guide policy and support a competitive and innovative AI landscape in India.
