Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), a GMR Aero-led consortium, has announced the reopening of the upgraded Terminal 2 (T2) at the Indira Gandhi International Airport from the intervening night of October 25–26, coinciding with the start of the winter schedule.
The revamped terminal, inaugurated by Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu, has been developed as a future-ready, passenger-centric hub featuring advanced technology, automation, and modern infrastructure designed to deliver a seamless travel experience. The inauguration ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, Airports Authority of India, CISF, and DIAL.
Speaking at the event, the minister said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India’s airports are being transformed into world-class transit hubs at an unprecedented pace. He noted that Delhi Airport, which handles nearly half of northern India’s passenger traffic and about 50,000 transfers daily, is fast emerging as a preferred transfer hub. “The modernization of the 40-year-old Terminal 2 reflects DIAL’s commitment to improving infrastructure and enhancing passenger convenience,” he said, congratulating DIAL and GMR for executing a smart and passenger-focused modernization project.
The upgraded Terminal 2 incorporates several technological features aimed at improving passenger efficiency and comfort. The introduction of self-baggage drop systems allows travelers to check in their luggage independently, reducing wait times. Six new passenger boarding bridges have been installed to enhance accessibility and safety. A virtual information desk provides real-time flight details, gate navigation, and airport service information, while modern ceilings, skylights, and improved flooring create a brighter, more welcoming environment. Enhanced facilities for persons with reduced mobility have also been added to ensure inclusivity.
In addition to these upgrades, the terminal has undergone major mechanical and electrical overhauls. Advanced HVAC systems will ensure better air quality and passenger comfort, while upgraded fire safety and power infrastructure will support safe and uninterrupted operations. Refurbished airside and apron areas have been optimized for efficient aircraft movement and future traffic growth.
With the reopening of T2, airline operations at IGI Airport have been restructured for better efficiency. IndiGo will operate domestic flights numbered 6E 2000–2999 from Terminal 2, in addition to its existing services from Terminals 1 and 3. Air India will shift around 60 domestic flights from Terminal 3 to Terminal 2. Air India Express will operate domestic services from Terminal 1, while SpiceJet and Akasa Air will continue to function from the same terminal. Together, Air India and IndiGo will operate around 120 daily domestic flights from the upgraded facility.
DIAL CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar described the reopening as a major milestone in the airport’s transformation journey. “The refurbished Terminal 2 represents a significant milestone in Delhi Airport’s modernization. With modern technology, smart infrastructure, and improved accessibility, the terminal will enhance efficiency and passenger convenience,” he said. Jaipuriar added that the reopening will enable balanced airline operations across terminals and strengthen Delhi’s position as India’s leading aviation hub.
