Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday interacted with interns of the Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS) in Hampi, Karnataka. Over 60 interns from across the state and representatives from leading partner companies, including Infosys, IBM, Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Consumer Products, Bharat Electronics Limited, Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, NMDC and Honeywell Technology Solutions, attended the session.
The Minister engaged directly with the interns, listening to their experiences and aspirations under PMIS. She discussed their motivations, learning journeys, and the skills they gained through the internship. Several interns who demonstrated exceptional performance have already secured full-time positions at their host companies. Sitharaman congratulated them and encouraged all interns to stay adaptable and confident in today’s evolving job market.
“It is pleasing to know the different ways in which this internship is contributing to personality development. Interns are learning core aspects of work and also sharpening other skills such as overcoming barriers to communication,” she said.
The event also highlighted powerful personal stories that showcased the impact of the scheme. One such story was that of Kaluva Hari Krishna from Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh, who secured a full-time role at TCS after interning in IT and Software Development. Coming from a farming family, he described the experience as “truly transformative.”
Another intern, R. Lakshmi Prasanna from Chittoor, shared how joining Infosys through PMIS gave her confidence and exposure to the corporate world. Similarly, Gouri H from Kerala, an embedded engineer intern at Honeywell, spoke about how PMIS opened doors to a career she had long aspired to. Lauding her journey, Sitharaman said, “I am impressed with Gouri’s positivity and perseverance. It is stories like hers that embody the true intent and spirit behind PMIS.”
The interaction underlined the growing impact of the internship initiative and the government’s commitment to nurturing a skilled and future-ready workforce in line with the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.
The PM Internship Scheme, part of the Prime Minister’s five flagship employment and skilling initiatives, targets youth aged 21–24 who are not enrolled in academic programs or formal employment. The scheme aims to offer over one crore paid internships in leading companies across India over the next five years to boost youth employability.
