India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer, who was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a Sydney hospital after sustaining a spleen laceration, is stable and has been responding to messages over the phone, India’s T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav said on Tuesday.
“We spoke to him. On the first day, when we got to know that he was injured, I called him, but I learnt he didn’t have his phone with him. Then I spoke to our physio, Kamlesh, who told me he was stable. On the first day, you can’t be sure of anything,” Suryakumar said ahead of the first T20I against Australia.
“We have been talking to him for the last two days. He has been replying. If he’s replying on the phone, it means he’s stable. The doctor is also with him, but he will remain under supervision for the next few days. So it’s looking good,” he added.
Iyer suffered the injury while taking a catch to dismiss Australia’s wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey during the third ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground. He was immediately taken to the hospital for further evaluation and later admitted to the ICU.
The injury, initially suspected to be a rib issue, turned out to be more serious after scans revealed a laceration to the spleen, prompting Iyer’s admission to the ICU.
The team management remains in close contact with him and continues to monitor his recovery.
Suryakumar also provided an update on Nitish Kumar Reddy, who missed the third and final ODI against Australia due to a left quadriceps injury sustained during the second match in Adelaide.
“He is doing fine. Yesterday, he did some running and batting in the nets. Today he wanted to take a break, as it was an optional practice, but we came to the ground for a team meeting, and he wanted to stay with the group,” Suryakumar said.
