Heavy rain forecast across Tamil Nadu, fishermen advised to stay ashore

Parts of Chennai and its neighboring districts are likely to experience light to moderate rainfall on Thursday, with the sky remaining partly cloudy and occasional thunderstorms expected. Temperatures in the city are expected to range between 26°C and 35°C as weather conditions remain unstable across Tamil Nadu.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall in several districts of the state due to the formation of two low-pressure systems, one over the southern peninsular region and another over the Kanyakumari Sea.

Districts including Coimbatore (hilly areas), Nilgiris, Erode, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur are likely to experience heavy showers, especially in ghat and high-altitude regions. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are also expected at a few places.

Meteorologists said the twin low-pressure systems are enhancing moisture flow and wind convergence over the southern peninsula, resulting in widespread rainfall across interior and coastal districts.

The IMD has advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea, warning of strong winds reaching up to 55 kmph along the southern Tamil Nadu coast, the Gulf of Mannar, and the Kanyakumari Sea. Those already at sea have been asked to return to safer shores.

Rainfall intensity is expected to reduce gradually from Thursday, though isolated heavy spells may continue over the Nilgiris and Western Ghats for another 24 hours.
