Heavy rainfall forecast for southern India; foggy mornings ahead for Delhi-NCR

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across parts of south peninsular India over the next few days, while Delhi-NCR is expected to experience foggy mornings and mild haze until October 24.

According to the IMD, two well-marked low-pressure areas currently lie over the southeast Arabian Sea and the southwest Bay of Bengal, leading to intensified weather activity across southern states. As a result, Tamil Nadu and Kerala are likely to experience extremely heavy rainfall on Tuesday and Wednesday, with rainfall exceeding 21 cm in some locations.

Between October 21 and 24, heavy to very heavy rain is also expected over Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Coastal Karnataka, while south interior Karnataka, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Rayalaseema are likely to witness heavy showers on select days during the same period.

In the past 24 hours, heavy to very heavy rainfall was recorded at isolated places in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, while Kerala, Rayalaseema, Coastal Karnataka, and South Interior Karnataka also reported heavy rainfall.

IMD defines heavy rain as rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm, very heavy rain as rainfall between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm, and extremely heavy rain as rainfall exceeding 204.4 mm.

Meanwhile, weather conditions in Delhi-NCR are expected to remain largely dry with partly cloudy skies and morning fog over the next few days.

On Tuesday, Delhi will see partly cloudy conditions with mist or haze developing by afternoon. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover between 31°C and 33°C, with light easterly winds.

From October 22 to 24, smog and shallow to moderate fog are expected in the morning hours, followed by clear or slightly hazy skies by noon. Maximum temperatures will remain near normal at around 32-34°C, while minimum temperatures will stay above normal by 1-3°C, ranging between 18°C and 21°C.

Light winds are expected to prevail, mainly from the northwest and north directions, with speeds generally below 10–12 kmph during the afternoon.
