The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall over parts of eastern India this week, with Odisha bracing for extremely heavy showers on October 2 due to the likely formation of a depression over the west-central Bay of Bengal. The wet spell is expected to continue across Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim until October 5. Assam, Meghalaya, and Tripura are also likely to receive heavy rainfall in the coming days.
From October 5 to 7, a fresh western disturbance is expected to bring widespread showers to northwestern states, with peak intensity on October 6. Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttarakhand are set to be impacted.
In the past 24 hours, heavy to very heavy rainfall was recorded in Assam, Nagaland, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, western Uttar Pradesh, and eastern Rajasthan. Several other regions, including Arunachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, and coastal Karnataka, also reported heavy rainfall.
IMD defines heavy rain as rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm, very heavy rain as rainfall between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm, and extremely heavy rain as rainfall exceeding 204.4 mm.
For the national capital region, the IMD has predicted generally cloudy skies until October 2, with light rainfall and thunderstorms expected on Gandhi Jayanti. On October 3 and 4, Delhi is likely to see partly cloudy skies with no significant rainfall. Maximum temperatures are expected to hover between 32°C and 36°C, while minimum temperatures will range from 24°C to 26°C, remaining slightly above normal. Winds will predominantly blow from the southeast and east directions at speeds between 8 and 15 kmph.
With both eastern and northwestern states set for an active weather spell, authorities have advised caution, especially in flood-prone regions of Odisha, Bihar, and West Bengal, as well as hilly areas in the north where heavy rains could trigger landslides.
