IMD alert: Andhra Pradesh braces for cyclone Montha; extremely heavy rainfall predicted in several states

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert as the Severe Cyclonic Storm “Montha” over the west-central Bay of Bengal is expected to make landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, around Kakinada, on Tuesday evening or night. The storm is likely to bring maximum sustained wind speeds of 90–100 kmph, gusting up to 110 kmph, accompanied by heavy rainfall and strong winds in coastal areas.

In addition to “Montha,” a depression over the east-central Arabian Sea is also influencing weather conditions across several regions. Under the combined impact of these systems, the IMD has forecast extremely heavy rainfall over coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, Telangana, and south Chhattisgarh on Tuesday, and over Odisha on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Over the next few days, heavy to very heavy rainfall is also expected across multiple regions. On October 29, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, Telangana, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh are likely to experience intense downpours. Rainfall activity is forecast to shift northwards thereafter, with eastern Madhya Pradesh and eastern Rajasthan likely to receive heavy rainfall on October 30, followed by Bihar on October 30 and 31, and sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on October 31. Meanwhile, Saurashtra and Kutch may witness intermittent heavy showers from October 28 to 31, while Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh could experience heavy rainfall between October 31 and November 1.

During the past 24 hours ending at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, extremely heavy rainfall was recorded at isolated places over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, while heavy to very heavy rainfall occurred in parts of eastern Rajasthan, Gujarat, and western Madhya Pradesh. Several other regions, including Rayalaseema, Kerala, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, eastern Madhya Pradesh, central Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu, also reported heavy rainfall.

IMD defines heavy rain as rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm, very heavy rain as rainfall between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm, and extremely heavy rain as rainfall exceeding 204.4 mm.

Meanwhile, weather conditions over Delhi-NCR are expected to remain largely stable with mild temperature variations through the week.

On Tuesday, the sky is likely to remain generally cloudy, with mist or haze developing in the evening. Maximum temperatures are expected to range between 27°C and 29°C, which is 2°C to 4°C below normal. Winds will blow from the southeast at speeds up to 10 kmph in the afternoon, easing later in the evening.

On October 29 and 30, Delhi is likely to experience partly cloudy skies with shallow fog or smog during the morning hours. Daytime temperatures are expected to hover between 29°C and 31°C, while the minimum temperature will remain between 17°C and 19°C, slightly above normal. Light winds will prevail, gradually shifting between the northeast and southeast directions through the day.

By October 31, the sky over the capital may turn generally cloudy by afternoon with morning mist or haze. Temperatures will rise slightly, with maximums likely between 30°C and 32°C and minimums between 18°C and 20°C. Winds will vary from southwest in the morning to northwest later in the day, maintaining speeds between 8 and 12 kmph.
