The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that extremely heavy rainfall is likely over parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and Meghalaya on Sunday. The weather office has also predicted that an intense western disturbance is likely to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall and hailstorms across several parts of Northwest India on October 5 and 6.
According to the IMD, very heavy rainfall is also expected over Bihar and Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday, and over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh on October 6.
During the past 24 hours ending 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, exceptionally heavy rainfall was recorded at isolated places in Bihar and sub-Himalayan West Bengal, while extremely heavy rain was reported in Meghalaya. Heavy to very heavy rainfall was also observed in parts of Marathwada, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, and heavy rainfall was recorded in eastern Rajasthan, Gangetic West Bengal, north interior Karnataka, Rayalaseema, Telangana, and Arunachal Pradesh. Isolated hailstorm activity was reported in Jammu.
IMD defines heavy rain as rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm, very heavy rain as rainfall between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm, and extremely heavy rain as rainfall exceeding 204.4 mm.
In Delhi-NCR, the IMD has forecast cloudy conditions with intermittent rain over the next few days.
On Sunday, the sky will remain partly cloudy, becoming generally cloudy towards evening, with light rain and thunderstorms likely during the night. The maximum temperature is expected to be between 32°C and 34°C, slightly below normal.
On October 6, Delhi is likely to experience a generally cloudy sky with a few spells of light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and winds reaching up to 40–50 kmph. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to range between 28°C and 30°C, and 22°C and 24°C, respectively.
The weather will remain cloudy on October 7, with one or two spells of light to moderate rain and thunderstorms likely during the morning and forenoon hours. Temperatures will hover around 29°C to 31°C during the day and 22°C to 24°C at night.
By October 8, conditions are expected to improve, with a partly cloudy sky and temperatures ranging between 31°C and 33°C during the day and 20°C to 22°C at night.
The IMD has advised caution for regions likely to witness extremely heavy rainfall and hailstorms over the next two days, warning of potential flooding, landslides, and travel disruptions in affected areas.
