Bhupender Yadav | Pre-COP30 Meet

India calls for balanced, dialogue-based approach to climate ambition at Pre-COP30 Meet

India has reaffirmed its commitment to the architecture of the Paris Agreement and stressed the importance of a balanced and inclusive approach to future global climate assessments, during the Pre-COP30 meetings held in Brasilia.

Speaking at the Global Stocktake (GST) breakout session, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav described the successful conclusion of the first Global Stocktake as a significant step, affirming that the Paris Agreement is being implemented in earnest.

The Global Stocktake, conducted every five years, assesses the collective global progress toward achieving climate goals. Yadav emphasised that the process plays a crucial role in boosting climate ambition by enabling countries to evaluate global progress, identify existing gaps, and shape enhanced climate actions at both national and international levels.

Highlighting the importance of maintaining momentum, the Minister said the GST acts as the driving force of the Paris Agreement, fostering political will and encouraging sustained efforts toward increased climate ambition.

Looking ahead, Yadav urged that future stocktake processes should not rush to include scientific assessments without thorough discussions on their broader relevance. He emphasised the need for scientific inputs to be grounded in rigor, accuracy, and robustness, with due consideration of diverse sources.

“The focus must now shift to the implementation of ambitious climate measures,” he said, stressing that the most urgent challenge is the lack of adequate resources for developing countries to effectively undertake adaptation and mitigation efforts.

“The time for continuous reviews without concrete action has passed. Dialogue is important, but action is imperative,” the Minister asserted.

The Pre-COP30 meeting serves as a critical platform for ministers and negotiators to prepare for the upcoming COP30 climate summit, which is scheduled to take place in 2025 in Belém, Brazil.
