India, Nepal ink deals to boost power sector cooperation, cross-border transmission links

India and Nepal on Wednesday took another step towards strengthening their energy partnership, with the two sides signing agreements to develop new cross-border power transmission lines aimed at boosting electricity trade and regional grid stability.

Nepal’s Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Kulman Ghising, met Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal in New Delhi to review ongoing cooperation in the power sector. The discussions covered progress on hydropower projects in Nepal and initiatives to deepen regional grid connectivity for cleaner and more reliable energy exchange.

During the discussions, the two ministers reviewed the progress of ongoing hydropower projects in Nepal and explored new avenues for strengthening regional energy cooperation.

India’s Power Grid Corporation and Nepal Electricity Authority signed joint venture agreements aimed at setting up transmission projects to boost cross-border electricity trade.

Under the agreement, two major projects will be taken up: the Inaruwa (Nepal)–New Purnea (India) 400 kV Double Circuit line and the Lamki (Dododhara) (Nepal)–Bareilly (India) 400 kV Double Circuit line. Once completed, these transmission corridors will enhance electricity exchange between India and Nepal, strengthen regional grid resilience, and contribute to sustained economic growth in both nations.
