India should get rightful place in UNSC: UK PM Keir Starmer

United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Thursday said that New Delhi should get its “rightful place” on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), citing India’s remarkable growth story and its expanding role in global affairs.

In his remarks after meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Raj Bhavan in Mumbai, Starmer made a strong case for India’s permanent membership in the UNSC.

“We want to see India taking its rightful place in the UNSC,” he said.

His stance aligns with that of several countries, including the United States, Germany, France, and Japan, which have consistently supported India’s bid for a permanent seat on the Council.

The UK leader’s statement reflects a growing recognition of India’s role in global governance and its contribution to multilateralism. Starmer’s remarks also echoed similar endorsements made last year by then US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, and other global leaders, who called for a “more representative” UN structure that includes India, Germany, Japan, and Brazil.

Russia, too, reiterated its support for India’s bid last month, with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov noting Moscow’s backing for increased representation from Asia, Africa, and Latin America in the global body.
