The Indian Army on Monday celebrated Infantry Day, also known as Shaurya Diwas, with solemn tributes at the National War Memorial in New Delhi, marking 79 years of the Infantry’s courage, sacrifice, and service to the Nation.
General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of the Army Staff, led the commemoration by laying a wreath at the Amar Chakra, honouring the supreme sacrifice of Infantry soldiers who laid down their lives in the line of duty. The ceremony was attended by senior Army officers, serving personnel, veterans, and families of the Bravehearts.
Three decorated war veterans – Major Ashish Sonal, Vir Chakra (Retd), a veteran of Operation PAWAN (1990); Subedar Major & Honorary Captain Kunwar Singh, Vir Chakra (Retd), who took part in Operation MEGHDOOT (1989); and Lance Naik Amrit, Vir Chakra (Retd), a participant of Operation CACTUS LILY (1971) – also laid wreaths on behalf of Infantry veterans, reaffirming the enduring legacy of valour and selfless service.
As part of nationwide celebrations, several commemorative events were organised across the country, including the Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa Memorial Seminar in Lucknow, the Shauryaveer Run, and the Felicitation of Veer Naris at Delhi Cantonment. An ‘Infantry Magazine’ showcasing the Infantry’s evolving capabilities and heroic exploits was also released on the occasion.
Infantry Day, observed annually on October 27, marks a defining moment in India’s post-independence military history. On this day in 1947, Indian Infantry troops became the first to land at Srinagar Airport to defend Jammu and Kashmir from Pakistan-backed tribal invaders. Their swift and courageous action safeguarded the territorial integrity of the newly independent nation.
The day serves as a tribute to the indomitable spirit, courage, and commitment of the Infantry – the largest fighting arm of the Indian Army – and their unwavering dedication to protecting India’s sovereignty and unity.
