Monsoon withdrawal likely from remaining parts of central and eastern India; heavy rain to persist over south peninsular region

The India Meteorological Department on Friday said that conditions are becoming favourable for the further withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from the remaining parts of central and eastern India – Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, along with the entire regions of Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. The withdrawal is also expected to extend to some parts of West Bengal, Sikkim, Odisha and Telangana over the next three to four days, marking a gradual retreat of the seasonal rains from central and eastern India.

However, as the monsoon recedes from central and eastern regions, rainfall is set to intensify over the southern peninsular region. The IMD has forecast isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu and south interior Karnataka for Friday and Saturday. This could lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas and traffic disruptions in urban centres.

During the past 24 hours, Tamil Nadu recorded heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places. coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Rayalaseema and south interior Karnataka also experienced heavy showers in some areas.

IMD defines heavy rain as rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm, very heavy rain as rainfall between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm, and extremely heavy rain as rainfall exceeding 204.4 mm.

Meanwhile, Delhi-NCR is expected to witness clear skies over the next four days, accompanied by cooler-than-usual temperatures.

On Friday, the sky is likely to remain mainly clear with maximum temperatures ranging from 29 to 31°C, which is expected to be 2 to 4°C below normal. Winds from the northwest will blow at speeds of 10 to 15 kmph in the afternoon, easing to below 10 kmph during the evening and night.

Clear weather will continue on October 11, with maximum temperatures between 31 and 33°C and minimum temperatures between 18 and 20°C. Skies are likely to remain clear on October 12 and 13, with temperatures hovering in the same range and winds remaining light to moderate, predominantly from the northwest during the day.

The expected dip in temperatures and clear skies over Delhi coincide with the seasonal shift following the retreat of the monsoon, offering residents a respite from humid conditions. Meanwhile, the southern states brace for heavy rains over the next two days as the monsoon continues to be active in the region.
