NBA releases ₹18.3 lakh to UP, Sikkim BMCs for biodiversity conservation

The National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) has disbursed ₹18.3 lakh to Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs) in Uttar Pradesh and Sikkim as part of the Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) mechanism under the Biological Diversity Act, 2002.

The funds were transferred through the respective State Biodiversity Boards to the Narrau village BMC in Akrabad Kaul Taluk, Aligarh District, Uttar Pradesh, and the Lampokhari Lake Area BMC in Aritar, Sikkim.

The financial allocation stems from the utilisation of local biological resources by companies. In Narrau village, a company accessed crop materials to produce fermentable compounds from lignocellulosic biomass. Similarly, in the Lampokhari Lake area, another company used microorganisms from water and soil samples for research purposes.
