The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY) has crossed a milestone in promoting household adoption of solar energy, with Public Sector Banks (PSBs) sanctioning over 5.79 lakh loan applications amounting to ₹10,907 crore as of September 2025. The achievement underscores the government’s continued push to make clean, affordable, and self-sustaining power accessible to citizens across the country.
The PMSGMBY scheme, launched to encourage rooftop solar installations, is being implemented with robust financial support from PSBs through streamlined and inclusive lending mechanisms. The credit delivery process has been made more efficient with collateral-free loans offered at competitive interest rates, simplified documentation, and longer repayment tenures aligned with electricity cost savings.
Loans under the scheme are processed digitally through the JanSamarth Portal, which is integrated with the National Portal for PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (pmsuryaghar.gov.in). This integration ensures a seamless, end-to-end digital experience for applicants, improving transparency, efficiency, and data-driven monitoring of loan disbursals.
Under the model loan scheme, applicants can avail of loans up to ₹2 lakh without collateral, enjoy a six-month moratorium period, and benefit from a digital sanction process based on self-declaration. The initiative aims to make rooftop solar adoption financially viable for middle and lower-income households by linking repayments with electricity savings.
Responding to feedback from beneficiaries and banks, several enhancements have been introduced to make the scheme more accessible. These include the inclusion of co-applicants to expand eligibility, removal of capacity-based caps, and simplification of documentation requirements.
The Department of Financial Services (DFS), in coordination with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), is closely monitoring the scheme’s progress. Regular reviews are being conducted through State Level Bankers’ Committees and Lead District Managers to ensure faster implementation, broader outreach, and deeper penetration across districts.
With over five lakh households already benefitting, the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is emerging as a transformative initiative in India’s journey toward energy self-reliance, driving both green growth and economic empowerment at the grassroots level.
